Gradisca d’Isonzo is a town located on the banks of the Isonzo River, close to the city of Gorizia, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The name “Gradisca” means “citadel city” and originates from the period in which the small country village turned into a fortress.

Gradisca d’Isonzo is one of the Most beautiful villages in Italy for the pleasant architecture of its buildings and for its huge history, art, culture and tradition heritage.

Within its walls, you can stroll through its suggestive alleys, ancient streets with lofty historic buildings up to Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia. You can visit the Castle with its Palazzo del Capitano (Captain’s Palace), Palazzo Torriani or the fifteenth-century Chiesa dell’Addolorata (Church of Our Lady of Sorrows) and then have something to eat or drink at one of the ancient cafés at the so-called ‘Spianata’ – the park in the heart of Gradisca d’Isonzo.

Along with its history, also its ancient cooking traditions have survived. The area is characterised by a unique wine and food tradition – a mixture of Venetian, Slavic and Italian culture.
