Mount Calvario, San Floriano del Collio, Oslavia bike track
An itinerary across museum ans castles in a land full of history
Due to the presence of some steep hills, the track is rather challenging.
The open-air memorial museum of Mount Calvario is dedicated to the victims of the bloody battle on the Isonzo River during World War I. The Mount is scattered with memorial stones for the soldiers killed on both fronts; one of these is dedicated to the Italian writer Scipio Slataper. On the mountaintop are an Obelisk and Three Large Crosses.
The Castle of San Floriano del Collio. Its military function ended during the eighteenth century and in 1860 it was turned into baron Giuseppe Formentini’s residence. Annexed to the building, counts Formentini’s wine cellar has hosted the interesting Museum of Wine and Rural Tradition since 1987.
The Oslavia Monumental Sacrarium was built in 1938 and gathers the remains of over 57,000 Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers fallen during World War I. From the Sacrarium you can enjoy a pleasant view of the town of Gorizia and of the Isonzo River.
In Piedimonte, the 5 Tongues Wall and the Time Wall showthirty colourful murals (3.5 x 2 m) painted by the students of the local Art School and by famous artists.
